Should I buy one of the new Sata II drives (some have 16Mb cache) or should I buy a 10K RPM drive? There's a lot of debate as to which is actually quicker. For my money, I'd far rather get a higher capacity SATA 300 drive (Sata II doesn't necessarily mean 300MB/s) than a tiny 10K rpm drive.

Two ATA, one SATA and one SATA II. The SATA disks run off the ICH5 connector. No RAID or anything fancy. The SATA II was the new addition and replaced a WD 120GB ATA disk (clicking noises now and then). It's a WD Caviar SE16 500GB SATA II. From the very first, I jumpered the SATA II so it behaves as a SATA.

I'm thinking about going with an external SATA II drive/enclosure. That way I can upgrade to a bigger disk as needed, and I'd get 3Gps throughput. Nope, that's the peak burst rate of the interface and not the speed of the drive. Around 50MB/sec. is tops for today's drives. let's see... if 50MB/sec = 400mbps,
